All About Dermaplaning for Smoother, Healthier Skin

We all know our skin pays the price for exposure to the environment. From the sun’s damaging rays to environmental toxins, it’s no wonder our appearance can be marred by fine wrinkles, acne scarring, and skin that looks uneven. Fortunately, dermaplaning can help.

At Orchid Wellness and Medical Spa in Edmonds, Washington, Dr. Shahriar Khezri and our top-notch team provide innovative treatment methods and state-of-the-art technologies for anti-aging and aesthetic procedures that leave you looking and feeling your best.

Everything we do — from helping you achieve a more youthful appearance to a slimmer, more sculpted body — is safe, evidence-based, and centered on you and your desired outcome.

Dermaplaning

Also known as microplaning or blading, dermaplaning shaves the dead outer layer of damaged skin cells and soft “peach fuzz” hairs from your face using an exfoliating blade. The result is skin that’s not only more even in appearance but also younger looking and more luminous.

Dermaplaning can help anyone regardless of their skin type. Those with facial imperfections like rough or dry skin, acne scars, or superficial pigmentation need not worry — this treatment can improve everyone’s appearance.

Adding a chemical peel directly following the procedure, when the skin is fresh and best able to deeply absorb its benefits, can provide even better results.

Procedure specifics

Similar to shaving, dermaplaning involves a sterile blade that we move slowly across the skin at a 45-degree angle. This process rids your skin of dead cells, light hairs, and other detritus that contributes to a dull, older looking appearance. The treatment allows new, fresh skin to shine.

Post-procedure, a calming product is applied to the skin as well as sunscreen to protect it from damage. As mentioned, an optional chemical peel can be added as well.

Risks and benefits

Dermaplaning is a safe procedure with minimal risks. Slight redness may occur following treatment. The skin may feel a bit more sensitive in the first several days as well.

There are a number of benefits to the procedure. Treatment is relatively quick, about 20-30 minutes, so it's possible to have it done on your lunch break. No recovery or downtime is needed, so you can go right back to work or resume your daily activities as soon as it’s done.

An improvement in your appearance is obvious immediately after the procedure, but the true extent of the results becomes fully apparent after several days as any minor skin irritation resolves.

Results typically last three weeks to a month and even longer if a chemical peel is performed.
